Crystals for High-Energy Physics calorimeters in extreme environments

چکیده

Scintillating crystals are used for calorimetry in several high-energy physics experiments. For many of them, performance has to be ensured in very difficult operating conditions, like a high radiation environment and large particle fluxes, which place constraints on response and readout time. An overview is presented of the knowledge reached up to date, and of the newest achievements in the field, with particular attention given to the performance of Lead Tungstate crystals exposed to large particle fluxes. Presented at the 9th ICATPP Conference on Astroparticle, Particle, Space Physics, Detectors and Medical Physics Applications Como, Italy, October 17th to 21st, 2005

Precision Crystal Calorimeters in High Energy Physics: Past, Present and Future

High Energy Physics: Past, Present and Future Ren-Yuan Zhu California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA 91125, USA Abstract. Precision crystal calorimeters traditionally play an important role in high energy physics experiments. In the last two decades, it faces a challenge to maintain its precision in a hostile radiation environment. This paper reviews the performance of crystal calorimete...

Applications of Cerium-Doped Gadolinium Silicate Gd2SiO5:Ce Scintillator to Calorimeters in High Radiation Environment

We have investigated applications of cerium-doped GSO (Gd 2 SiO 5 :Ce, or GSO:Ce) scintillating crystals to high precision electromagnetic calorimeters in high energy physics experiments. Basic properties of GSO:Ce such as the decay time, light yield and radiation hardness were measured using short (4 cm long) sample crystals. The radiation hardness tests include the scintillator stability unde...

A Study on Radiation Damage in BGO and PWO-II Crystals

We report in this paper an investigation on radiation damage in 20 cm long BGO crystals produced at SIC as well as 20 cm long PWO-II crystals produced at BTCP for the proposed Panda experiment at GSI. The optical and scintillation properties of BGO and PWOII crystals, such as transmittance, light output and light response uniformity, were measured before and after γ-ray irradiations at differen...

A fast, effective calibration technique has been developed for future Superconducting Supercollider (SSC) calorimeters based upon the radiative capture of protons from a pulsed Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator in a fluoride target . The intense flux of low energy photons acts as a clean "pulse generator" calibration signal equivalent to 20 GeV or more . This calibration technique ha...

Single crystalline LuAG fibers for homogeneous dual-readout calorimeters

For the next generation of calorimeters, designed to improve the energy resolution of hadrons and jets measurements, there is a need for highly granular detectors requiring peculiar geometries. Heavy inorganic scintillators allow compact homogeneous calorimeter designs with excellent energy resolution and dual-readout abilities. These scintillators are however not usually suited for geometries ...
